How do I get to the cable cars? 01/11/2009
There are two suggest ways to get a ride on the cable cars. If you want to be "car-free", just walk down to the corner of Stanyan and Carl and take the N Judah train heading inbound to Union Square. Once off, look for the Powell Street cable car - this will take you up and down some classic San Francisco hills and ultimately bring you to Fishermans' Wharf. The other way is to just drive your car to Fisherman's Wharf, downtown, or Union Square, park the car, and jump on the cable cars. Skiing in Lake Tahoe 01/11/2009
Lake Tahoe is about a 4 hour drive from the house if the roads are clear. This season the snow has been outstanding and of course it is nice to come back to San Francisco when it is 67 degrees now in January - lovely and one reason why we have made San Francisco our home. We went to the members' pre-opening of the California Academy of Sciences and think that visitors will very much enjoy the exhibits at the academy. The architecture alone is worth seeing - see the website of the Academy to get an appreciation. Kids (and parents) enjoyed the T Rex skeleton, a great whale skeleton and several marine exhibits. There is a swamp and an African wildlife exhibit to name a few. Our son's favorite though was the two heads snake - I guess my favorite too. The Academy within a mile from the house so about a 15-20 minute walk or very short drive. Very, very fine dining ($$$$$) 04/27/2008
Just remembered that some people come to San Francisco and the Bay Area just for the food and that I should add a couple notable destinations for those ready for a true dining event. The most notable of all in the Bay Area is the French Laundry in Yountville (1.5 to 2 hour drive in wine country). Here in San Francisco (and not including Zazzie and Eos on Cole Street), we recommend Aqua (California Street), Boulevard (end of Market, downtown) and Michael Minna (Fisherman's wharf). There are others, but if you want a complete dining experience, these three will deliver. Reservations are a must (months in advance for French Laundry and Minna). We love the live performances put on by the Buddy Club. The exhibits are also terrific. This is very close to the house - either a long walk or a short ride. San Francisco Symphony link 04/27/2008
Here it is. A cab or limo ride takes about 10 minutes. The N Judah also stops close by (it is the Civic Center stop). This is off Van Ness. Cable Car Info 04/27/2008

This is your ticket either out to the ocean (Ocean Beach), to Union Square (connect to cable cars and Fisherman's Wharf), to downtown and the baseball stadium where the San Francisco Giants play (and sometimes concerts are held there as well). Night Life 04/27/2008
We honestly are not in touch all that happens after we go sleep but we have a link here to help you out if you are wondering what some options are: http://www.yelp.com/c/sf/nightlife Comedy Venues 04/27/2008
We get 'em all sooner or later and of course San Francisco is home to Robin Williams who will occasionally try out new material before us locals as he did in 2001 at a time when we all needed to laugh again. |
