There are two suggest ways to get a ride on the cable cars.  If you want to be "car-free", just walk down to the corner of Stanyan and Carl and take the N Judah train heading inbound to Union Square.  Once off, look for the Powell Street cable car - this will take you up and down some classic San Francisco hills and ultimately bring you to Fishermans' Wharf.  The other way is to just drive your car to Fisherman's Wharf, downtown, or Union Square, park the car, and jump on the cable cars.

This is your ticket either out to the ocean (Ocean Beach), to Union Square (connect to cable cars and Fisherman's Wharf), to downtown and the baseball stadium where the San Francisco Giants play (and sometimes concerts are held there as well).

The closest stop is Stanyan and Carl.

There are a couple bike rental places close to the house.  This is a wonderful way to tour Golden Gate Park.  You could also bike through the Presidio and out across Golden Gate Bridge if you are up for a longer bike trip.
